I use a data entry form for collecting data in the field that I have designed and/or customized myself. Will your system be able to support it?

GeAgro Collector's data entry forms and reports are fully customizable, so they can be adapted to all kinds of forms and data collection purposes.

What guarantee do I have?

We are confident that you will like Collector and will find it very useful, and we will strive to solve any issues that may come up. But if you decide that the product is not the one for you, you may return it within 30 days according to the license agreement terms and conditions.

How did this project get started?

The concept for this innovative application was born from the express need of soil scientists for a software tool that facilitates their operations. This project was initiated from conversations we had with Laurel F. Mueller, Consulting Soil Scientist and president of Soil Services Company, Inc., and Board Director of the NE Region of the NSCSS (National Society of Consulting Soil Scientists, Inc.).

What if I already have a GIS software?

If you already use a GIS application such as ArcView, for instance, you can continue using it. GeoAgro Collector has the ability to export and import different types of files, such as shape, drawing and spreadsheet formats, along with all the GIS functionality you need.

What hardware devices should I use with GeoAgro Collector?

GeoAgro Collector runs on any PC using Windows XP or Windows Vista running Microsoft Office Enterprise Edition 2007 (including InfoPath 2007 application). This includes a wide variety of hardware devices, from desktops PCs to portable devices like notebooks and Tablet PCs.
The following is a review of some portable devices available in the market, which can be used in the field with Collector.
We do not sell, nor recommend any of the devices listed below, since we have not tested them. We may later test some of these models, and publish the results in order to provide recommendations.
We suggest not buying hardware until the software is rolled-out and we advise you to do so. Hardware tends to get less expensive and better with time, so the more you can postpone a purchase, the better.

Notebook PCs

There are several models of Notebook PCs in the market from multiple manufactures, including Dell, Hewlett Packard, IBM, Toshiba, etc. Prices vary upon model and size.
One advantage of Notebook PCs is their versatility, since they can also be used at the office for everyday work. However when used in the field they can’t be used while the user is standing up, or moving, since they require the use of both hands.

Rugged Notebook PCs

W5_Head_OnVery similar to the Notebook PCs mentioned above, but built to withstand severe conditions of water, dirt, and shocks. Another advantage over regular notebooks is that they generally have better visibility under direct sunlight.
Rugged notebooks are more expensive than regular notebooks.
One example is the Panasonic line of Toughbook computers. For pricing information, see the ToughOnline website. For example, the Toughbook CF-W5 costs about $2,000.

Tablet PCs

Tablet PCs are similar to Notebook PCs, except that they lack a keyboard and a Mouse. The mouse is replaced by a touch-sensitive screen, which you can tap using a stylus or a finger. The keyboard is replaced by a combination of handwriting recognition and an on screen keyboard. The use of the keyword can be minimized by using purpose built applications.
The Collector is such an application; most operations do not require a keyboard, you can do most everything by tapping on the screen.
Tablet PCs are more portable than Notebook PCs, you can use them while walking or standing, holding it on one hand while using the other to tap on the screen.

Some Tablet PCs have a swiveling screen that allows them to function as either a Notebook PC or as a Tablet PC by swiveling the screen and covering the keyboard:

A popular model is the Itronix Duo-Touch, which can even be immersed into water.
Rugged features increase the price, the Itronix shown above costs about $3,000.

UMPCs

UMPC stands for Ultra Mobile PC. They are similar to Tablet PCs, but smaller and therefore more portable.
A popular model is the Asus R2H, which includes a GPS device and a camera.
The price for the ASUS R2h is about $900. For other options see http://umpc.com/Devices.aspx?ClickID=wtb

GPS Devices

GeoAgro Collector requires the PC to have a GPS device connected to it. Some of the PCs shown above already have a GPS device included. For those who don’t have one, you may add a Bluetooth GPS device, they cost around $100.

Belkin F8T003 Bluetooth USB Adapter (F8-T003, F8 T003)The GPS Bluetooth device communicates wirelessly with the PC, so it requires that the PC have a Bluetooth transmitter. Many of the PCs shown above already have one, and for those that don’t, you may add one that connects to a USB port, the price is about $30.

Camera

Some of the PCs shown above have a camera included. For these, Collector allows you to take pictures while in the field and automatically associate the pictures to the inspected points.
For those PCs that don’t have a camera on it, you may take pictures using any digital camera, and later at the office upload them to Collector.
